How to Start the Morning on a Positive Vibe

How to Start the Morning on a Positive Vibe

We want you to be surrounded by positive vibes!

Every time we open our eyes from a blissful night’s sleep, we have the chance to make a change and live our best life. Your morning alarm goes off, and it’s your choice to set the tone for the next 24 hours. How you start your morning will impact your attitude and outlook on the day ahead. But it’s not always as simple as it sounds – we can relate. Maybe you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or in a funk from a situation that happened a day or two before. No matter the reason, you can take action to pull yourself into a happier state and shit your mood into a good one.

We have the chance to make a change and live out best lives.

Does your morning routine consist of staying in bed as late as possible while barley making it to work on time? Getting the day off on the wrong foot can negatively impact how your day goes. I have to admit that there was a time when I was like this. I convinced myself that I was a night own and would make up the work time by working later or doing things I needed to get done later on in the day. I didn’t have a positive routine in the morning to get me going. Instead, I started the day off like a zombie. Imagine how different your life would be if you had a positive morning routine that ensured an enjoyable day instead! A morning routine that radiates positivity does not have to be complicated. It merely just has to get you started.

Read on to find out how to set a positive vibe first thing in the morning.

Deep Breaths: Set your timer for five minutes, sit wherever you are, close your eyes, and focus on the breath coming in and going out. You can repeat a phrase or mantra on each in/out-breath or focus on the space between breaths. If the mind wanders, simply notice it and, without judgement, gently bring the mind back to the breath.

Morning Walks: Go for a walk and bring yourself back to the now through your sense. Breath– take in the scents around you, all the subtle layers of them, such as flowers, fresh-cut grass, and morning rain. Feel the air around you, the body’s motion, the earth under your feet as you walk, and the sun on your face. Hear the sounds of birds chirping, dogs barking, children playing, you’re breathing, and even the heartbeat in your chest.

Don’t look at your phone when you first wake up: Avoid looking at your phone the first five to fifteen minutes (or longer) of waking up. Use this time to disconnect from technology and connect with your thoughts. This includes waiting to respond to work-related emails/texts/chats until you’ve completed your “you time.”

Express Gratitude: Keep a gratitude list in your notes, phone, or journal, and read over it after you’ve had your no-phone time in the morning. You can even text a close friend or relative and let them know you’re grateful for their friendship. This small gesture will boost your mental outlook in a big way.

Hype Yourself Up: Look in the mirror and HYPE yourself up like you would a friend. Thank your body, skin and face for being how it is and tell yourself you are looking great. Sounds silly, but try it.

Morning Sweat: Schedule a morning workout (even if you’re feeling super lazy) and encourage yourself to show up and sweat it out. Exercising the morning increases energy and improves productivity for the day.

Water time: Drink water. You’ve likely gone close to 8 hours without water consumption. As soon as I wake up on an empty stomach, chugging some water had instantly made me feel refreshed and energized. Throw some lemon in there that you juiced the night before to cleanse out that toxin build-up from when you were asleep.

Positive Affirmations: Say positive affirmations out loud: “I can do this.” “I am successful.” “I will complete this project.” These are all examples of how to increase confidence and ultimately manifest a positive vibe for the day.

5 Strategies to CHANGE YOUR SKIN

5 Strategies to CHANGE YOUR SKIN

Beauty, the saying goes, is only skin deep. But the importance of skin goes a lot deeper. Most of us think skin as just our body’s visible outer layer, but doctors consider skin an organ, meaning that it is very much alive and changed with many important duties.

When we think of skin-care, most of us default immediately to products, expensive products that we see on TV or in ads that assure us of their quality and ability to change our skin. When we think of the skin care we own we tend to think which ones are the most esteemed, most expensive, and most beautiful products on our bathroom shelves. Those factors definitely play a part in our overall sense of self-care, and some of that feel-good indulgence, of course. But the real catalyst for our outer beauty begins inside, and that’s the most important.

The real catalyst of our outer beauty begins inside, and that’s the most important.

We want to outline specific strategies for you that, when diligently practices, can lead to transformation. These techniques are truly the foundation of glowing health, so plenty of other benefits may follow.

Properly Hydrate

The easiest and most important first step you can do for healthy skin is to male sure you are properly hydrated. Your cells are nearly 70% water. Staying adequately hydrated helps to keep your cells plump and healthy, plus aid in circulation-all important for glowing skin. Chronic dehydration can cause a loss of elasticity from the skin and the appearance of premature aging. Its also helpful to add some liquid minerals to some of your daily water intake to make sure you are absorbing what you need.

Cut Sugar

Lower your sugar intake. Too much sugar in your diet produces advanced glycation end products, aptly referred to as AGEs. These AGEs break down the foundation of healthy skin and specifically attack collagen and elastin – both important for youthful and healthy skin. The first place to reduce sugar is in your beverages. The next step is to make sure the food you’re eating is plain or unsweetened versions of your favourite foods, like yogurt, oatmeal, etc. This isn’t to say you can’t eat fruit. Fruit is a fantastic way to sweetened up breakfasts without adding syrups, honey, or plain old sugar. Just be reasonable – everything in moderation.

Collagen Support

Here at Flourish Health we like to focus on the benefits of plant-based options for all ways of natural consumptions. For all our plant-based friends consuming foods like tempeh, tofu, black beans, kidneys, squash, chia, peanuts and cashews are all great plant-based options. Eating foods rich in vitamin C, like citrus fruits, broccoli, and red peppers, can help support your body’s natural production of collagen. People who aren’t plant-based can lean on bone broth or eating chicken on the bone in order to get a source of collagen. If those foods are hard for you to eat, supplementing with a collagen supplement that’s been proven effective is a great way to get healthy skin. You want to find supplements that have great bioavailability, because recent studies show that collagen can even help reduce the skins UVB-induced photoaging (the specific sun rays that wreck your skin.)

Manage Stress

We’re all living in stressful times lately, but even everyday stress can affect the quality of your skin. Taking time to relax and practice self-care can look different for many people. For some it can be meditating, long walks, or a call to a friend. If you need extra support, I recommend supplementing with a good-quality full spectrum CBD supplement. CBD can be very helpful with helping the body deal with stress, anxiety, and poor sleep, which can all negatively affect your skin.

Eat Fat

Low-fat diets belong in the ’90s. Healthy fats are the building blocks of healthy skin cells. Eating items like avocado, whole eggs, grass-fed beef, and wild salmon helps keep your skin cells hydrated, plumper, and youthful while also helping to reduce inflammation, which can cause puffiness, redness, and other skin issues. Even better, a diet rich in healthy fats can help balance blood sugar levels, helping to reduce those AGEs.

Time-Saving Hacks for Moms

Time-Saving Hacks for Moms

Whether you’re a working mom or stay at-home mom, it just seems like our jobs are never done. There’s always a room to clean, and meals to be cooked, or laundry to be done. Although those are important things to do, it’s even more crucial to spend as much time as you can with your children because you just don’t get this time back.

Occasionally motherhood can be summed up in a few words: wake the kids, make breakfast, get everyone dressed, leave, forget something, leave again, and that’s just before 10 am. The ability to navigate all of that – or better yet, navigate it all with dignity and grace and a pinch of sanity – is as much science as it is art. We all need to get better at managing our time and organizing our lives in order to maximize the small amount of time that we do have. Whether it’s spending a little more money for services that a load off of us, planning out our day better, or getting things done in advance, there are a few easy steps we can make to see what small changes give us more time with our littles.

“Life doesn’t come with a manual. It comes with a mother.”

#MomHacks

Here are some time-saving hacks that can buy you some extra time to spend with your family.

Have a daily schedule or routine

Especially if you’re a stay at home mom, you can let the time tick away and get away from you. Make and set a specific schedule for the day that you don’t let yourself deviate from. Set the alarm or stopwatch on your phone/microwave/Alexa, so you stick by these times for when to change tasks.

Outsources groceries + snacks

Everyone is running around from place to place during the school season, and sometimes you just don’t have time to make it to the store. Outsourcing snacks for those busy weeks ensure the pantry and fridge are stocked without having to spend an hour or more at the store.

Hello Fresh is a meal delivery service that comes weekly; you get to choose your meals, the amount of meal you get, and the portion sizes.

Thrive Market has healthy, top of the line organic products from groceries to supplements to clean supplies and beauty.

Place online grocery curb-side pick up orders so that you don’t have to go into the store. All you have to do is pull up while they load it all into your truck for you. The best part is you can add and edit your cart when the order is placed up until 24 hours before you go to pick it up.

When it doubt Amazon Prime has everything you’ll every need, from groceries to batteries and diapers.

Get Organized

I know this sounds simple for some, but the cleaner and more organized the house is, the easier it is for you to productive. Organizing your kitchen pantry with clear containers, bins and spice holders will make you feel superior when you’re trying to make breakfast, prepare lunches, and get that dinner preppier for after school. Bins with lids, storage units, and anything that allows a label is precisely what you need to feel put together. If you have all the items you need to use in organized bins or compartments and know where everything is, you will be more productive and less stressed.

Let technology take some of the mental load

You can automate just about anything with smart devices, and the tech is only getting better. Some of our favourites are Google Assistant and Google Home Hub- you can create reminders for everyone in your family, so you don’t have to. They can make phone calls for you, add items to your shopping list, read your instructions for a recipe, and numerous other things.

If you have an Amazon device instead, you can create morning routines for both you and the kids. With an Echo Dot Kids Edition, you can tell them breakfast is ready or customize alarms or checklists to guide them.

Meal Prep and Planning

Most people like use Sunday to do their meal planning and to prep. Make a schedule of your meals for the week with a list of ingredients. Prepare as much of these meals at the beginning of the week as you can so you’re not stuck in the kitchen for long. Try to make meals that overlap ingredients, so you’re buying less and enlisting the kids and husband to help out! This is an excellent time for your kids to start learning how to do chores and help out in the kitchen, and if you have toddlers, they just love imitating their momma.

Sync calendar with your partner

Sometimes life gets SO busy, and the best of people can forget essential tasks, or you have to switch up schedules last minute, so your partner needs to pick up kids from daycare when you usually do. Find a way to manage a calendar that works for you both and sync it up every Sunday, so everyone knows who is doing what and going where. Paper planners and whiteboards in the kitchen are great, but we like doubling up with the digital calendars because it’ll send an alert or reminder.

Saying NO

You don’t have to commit to everything asked of you! Whether it’s a PTA meeting, a birthday party, or a gathering. Saying no to the extras to use your spare time to be with your family is always the right answer.

Establish a command centre

If you’ve ever spent an extra 20 minutes searching for your kids homework folder at 7 am or looking for your keys, you’re not alone. Mornings are often the craziest time of the day for any family. Set aside an area in common space that serves as a command station. Maybe it’s a mudroom, or you have a designated space in the kitchen. This is where keys, phones, chargers, homework, notes that need to be signed, and anything else essential needs to go. Get the family in the routine of putting everything in the chosen spot when they get home, so you never waste time looking for things. If you’re limited on space, an on-the-wall organizer like this is a great solution.

House Cleaning Services

Cleaning is never on the list of things to-do, there just isn’t enough time to clean toilets or dust the top shelf in your living room. Most of the time, many moms only have time for quick tidy ups, but definitely no deep cleaning. This is when hiring someone to come in and do the nitty gritty detailing of the house every couple of weeks is a great thing to do to give yourself extra time to do other things.

Reduce Screen/Social Media/Phone Time

We’re all guilty of wasting too much time on our phones and falling down a rabbit hole of social media. The new iPhone update even has a way you can schedule downtime from the phone and apps. You can set times of the day where certain apps and services won’t be available based on what settings you choose.

The Key to a Successful At-Home Workout

Key to a Successful At-Home Workout

Even if you have a small space,  no equipment (hello body weight workouts!!) or very little time, there are many great resources and tips to help you workout at-home.

With gyms being closed and the new normality is based on your once in-class classes being online, we know it can be challenging to find yourself in your usual fitness routine. There’s just something so much more comfortable about physically going to the gym, (even if you have all the equipment in your own home), visiting your trainer, or attending that evening spin class. Changing or creating any new healthy habit is a real challenge. It’s even more of a problem to keep it amid all the distractions surrounding you like what you find in the comfort of your own home. We at Flourish are here to provide you with some tips and resources you can use to find yourself more in touch with streaming workouts because they have many benefits to them if given a chance.

In order to stick with it, you’ve got to choose something you actually want to do and that will work with your schedule and lifestyle.

Sometimes finding the workout that suits your needs isn’t the hardest part, but your at-home surroundings and motivation levels are. I’m here to give you some tips that have helped the Flourish team well Flourish with a good at-home workout. Here are a few tips that got us headed in the right direction.

  • Create a schedule for your workouts. Block it out and make it non-negotiable. We are creatures of habit and schedules. Often if it’s not on the calendar, it doesn’t happen.
  • Start small. If you are trying to make this a new healthy habit, try focusing on exercising just 10-15 minutes. Anything above and beyond is a gold star. There is a definite power to just starting, and you’ll be amazed at what only 5 minutes can do for you.
  • Focus on the process rather than the outcome. Process goals are the way to go when it comes to fitness. Take in and enjoy the process. Try to stray away from only thinking about the end, immediate goal; instead, make small goals to keep you going.
  • Use incentives. Is there something that will bring you joy and happiness while not undermining you fitness goals? It could be something like a new pair of shoes or allowing yourself an extra 15 minutes with Netflix this evening.
  • Get an exercise partner. You will push yourself harder in most cases (if it’s a good fit), and you will have someone to keep you accountable when you feel like bailing out.
  • Create a dedicated space to exercise. This space is ONLY for exercise. Make it someplace you’d like to be. Something, this means turning the treadmill around to face a better view.
  • Make your space accessible. Many have a little corner where they can put their weights or exercise ball. If you own that treadmill-you’ve already got the space you need. Clear all the clothes or junk around it to make it something you can easily access and want to use.
  • At home doesn’t have to mean in home. Answer the call of the great outdoors. Get outside, enjoy the weather. Walking, running, sports, jumping jacks, it doesn’t matter. It will spice things up and put a smile on your face by the end of it.
  • A good playlist. Take the time to put together a playlist that will make you want to move, jump, and dance. Blaring your favourite tune will automatically add a little extra motivation to break a sweat.

The Best Streaming Workouts

The beauty of online workouts is that they can be accessed anytime and anywhere with enough space for a yoga mat and stable Wi-Fi connection. There are a ton of options with many free trials periods-so the key is finding the one that brings a little joy into your day. With that being said, money is being saved, and you are more than capable of seeing the same results as going to the persinal trainer or spin class. It’s all about figuring out what workouts work best for you and keep you engaged. Please take advantage of the free trials that many programs offer; test them all out until you find one that resonates with your goals and your satisfctory level.

The Sculpt Society

The Sculpt Society is trainer Megan Group’s universe of peppy, easy-for-beginners dance cardio classes. Which isn’t to say they aren’t challenging: you will sweat and feel a burn. Classes range from five to fifty-five minutes, depending on what you’re in the mood or have time for – and as a bonus, you can access meditations from Kelsey Patel.

P.Volve

The focus is on tonight through functional movement: Trainer Stephen Pasterino designed each motion to replicate how your body moved when you walk, run, reach, step, etc. Your heart rate will be elevated the whole time, but it’s not cardio; you really feel your muscles being challenged. Pasterino has developed a firm ball that you wedge high up between your thighs; it’s designed to dig into the fascia’s superficial layers and help you work your glutes and feel your core. But if you’re without, you can filter for classes that require no props.

Melissa Wood Health

It’s a low impact workout that is a mix of Pilates and Yoga, but it is a real muscle burner. She is a firm believer of small, intricate movements to provide you will these long lean lines we all crave. There is a range of videos so that you can squeeze them in when and wherever you can. What I mean by that is that she provides you with workouts that involve holding a chair or wall so that you can get in that flow during a break at work or at the airport before you catch a flight.

Chloe Ting Program (provided on her website, it’s FREE!!)

Chloe Ting provides you with so many targeted program choices with daily videos you must complete for an alloted amount of time to see results. They are low-impact workouts that keeo you accountable throughout. This is a great step in the right direction for a free program to reach your fitness goals.

The Be.Come Project by Bethany C.Meyers

Much of the marketing around online fitness classes and, even just fitness in general is framed around body insecurity as motivation. You’ll find none of that here. Each week, Meyers releases a new class designed to be done as many times as you’d like throughout the next seven days are you get familiar with the movements. Bonus: Classes are very doable (yet effective) twenty-five minutes.

Aaptiv

If you’re not a visual person-or, if you can’t figure out the right setup angle for your laptop screen – Aaptiv is perfect. It’s audio-only, which means all you need is the app and some headphones to get going. It’s choose-your-own-adventure; it can function as a training companion on a run or at the gym or as a class in your living room. There are thousands of options, so it’s just a matter of filtering for skill level, workout style, and duration.

At-Home Date Night

At-Home Date Night

Whether you’ve been cooped up with your partner for over a month now or meeting someone new on video chat, a date night now requires signifcantly more creativity than it once did. We want to help you curate the perfect, cost-friendly at-home date night ideas for you and your significant others.

Before we focus on the ideas, let’s talk about what you can do to make yourself date night ready. I don’t know about you, but my lack of effort in the appearance department has gone down the drain since quarantine has begun, and it can make or break you and your self-esteem. Getting yourself put together like you would if you had somewhere to be can change how you approach your day. So, my suggestion to get you in your date night mood would be to pretend you were going out for a night on the town. Throw on a flowy dress, a pair of wedges, a little bit of makeup to brighten your complexion, and your favourite hoop earrings. For one, you will feel good about yourself, but you’ll also have your significant other turning their head.

Date night = the best night

We know life gets busy, but now with these unexpected changes that allow us to stay home, put aside one night a week to focus on one another. Date night at home doesn’t have to be complicated or costly, so put away the phone, make a playlist of you and you’re partners favourite songs and try some of these ideas.

Date Night Ideas

  • Forget Wine and Cheese… how about a Chocolate tasting night? Pick six chocolates to taste test after dinner ordered in! Pair it with your favourite alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink.
  • Set up a mini spa with incense and give each other massages. Use Google or Youtube to learn some proper techniques.
  • Have a “finger food only dinner” and feed each other.
  • Go on a picnic. If it is warm enough, try to go outside (even if it’s in your backyard). And if it’s too cold, spread a quilt out on the floor, open a bottle of wine and have some finger foods while keeping your picnic indoors.
  • Have a karaoke night! Find songs with lyrics on Youtube and sing your hearts out. This is funniest if you can find some heart wrenching ballads to belt out with one another.
  • Have a video game night. Seriously, this can be a lot of fun. Use whatever game station you have, whether it’s a competitive game of Mario Kart or your partners favourite war game.
  • Make it a theme night. Choose a theme and centre everything you do around it. For example, if you choose an Italian theme, you could eat spaghetti and gelato, then watch a movie like ‘Eat Pray Love’ -some other fun theme ideas are; Mexican, Asian, Christmas Dinner, 1950’s, etc.
  • Have a romantic candlelit dinner. It doesn’t matter if you’re eating hot dogs and Mac and Cheese or steak; anything candlelit will be romantic. Set up the table with fancy napkins and flowers to add that romantic feel to the evening.
  • Have a homemade pizza night. This is a fun and easy way to get you two in the kitchen together while cooking comfort food that will taste amazing.
  • Have Breakfast in Bed (even if it’s a night date)! Breakfast for dinner is one of my favourite meals. Pull out the TV trays and go all out in your pyjamas and fuzzy socks.
  • Have a living room campout. Make indoor stores and tinfoil dinner in your oven. Make a tent out of pillows and blankets and full out the blow-up mattress.
  • Have a movie marathon. Pick a theme (whether it’s an actor, genre, or series) and watch as many as possible. If you fall asleep, you can always pick up where you left off another night.
  • Bubble bath for two. Need I say more?

You can do so many things in the comfort of your own home that will add some extra flair into your ordinary evenings spent with your partner.
